Acoustic Frequencies, Hearing Limits & Waveform Physics
1The Human Hearing Spectrum & Frequency Bands
- Sub-Bass (20 Hz – 60 Hz): Felt as physical vibrations rather than heard as definite pitch. Requires dedicated subwoofer drivers.
- Bass (60 Hz – 250 Hz): The rhythmic foundation of modern music, including kick drums and bass guitars.
- Midrange (250 Hz – 4,000 Hz): Human hearing is most sensitive in this region (speech intelligibility centers around 1 kHz to 3 kHz). Concert pitch A4 vibrates at 440 Hz.
- Highs & Treble (4,000 Hz – 20,000 Hz): Cymbals, sparkle, and ambient air. Upper limit sensitivity typically declines from 18–20 kHz in youth to 12–14 kHz in older adulthood.
2Waveform Harmonic Profiles Compared
The timbre (color) of a tone is defined by its mathematical waveform and accompanying harmonic overtones:
• Sine: Fundamental frequency only; zero harmonics
• Square: Odd harmonics only (1/n); hollow, buzzy chiptune sound
• Triangle: Odd harmonics decaying rapidly (1/n²); warm, flute-like
• Sawtooth: All integer harmonics (1/n); bright, brassy, aggressive
Our tool incorporates smooth gain ramp automation to eliminate audible DC offset clicks or transducer popping when toggling playback.
