Trading Fundamentals: Fees, Slippage & Break-Even Math
Maker vs. Taker Exchange Fees
When trading on cryptocurrency exchanges (such as Binance, Coinbase, or Kraken), trading fees depend on order type:
- Maker (Limit Order): Adds liquidity to the order book; typically incurs lower fees (0.02%–0.10%).
- Taker (Market Order): Removes liquidity instantly; incurs higher fees (0.05%–0.50%).
Over frequent trades, compounding entry and exit fees severely eat into net profits unless factored in.
The Break-Even Price Formula
Selling at your exact purchase price produces an immediate net loss due to transaction commissions.
To break even on a Long position with an entry fee f₁ and exit fee f₂:
For a $60,000 coin with 0.1% fee on each side, you must sell at $60,120.12 just to walk away even.
Short Selling Mechanics
In a short trade, you borrow and sell an asset expecting its price to decline, buying it back (covering) at a cheaper price later.
Gross profit is (Entry Price - Exit Price) × Quantity. If the market rises above your entry price, your position suffers losses.
