CSS Clip-Path Performance & Techniques

GPU Accelerated Clipping vs. SVG Masks

The CSS clip-path property creates a clipping region that determines which part of an element should show. Everything inside the path renders; everything outside is hidden.

Modern browser rendering engines (Chromium Blink, WebKit, Gecko) calculate basic shapes (polygon(), circle(), inset()) directly on the compositor thread via GPU shaders without causing expensive document layout reflows.

Animating Clip Paths Smoothly

You can animate clip-path with CSS transitions or keyframes provided both shapes have the exact same number of vertices!

For example, transitioning a 4-point rectangle (polygon(0 0, 100% 0, 100% 100%, 0 100%)) to a 4-point trapezoid creates fluid, cinematic morphing cards and reveal transitions.
