GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) Table Syntax
How Alignment Indicators Work in GFM
Markdown tables specify text alignment through the colon (:) placement on the header separator line:
- Left-aligned (
:---or---): Standard default for text strings, descriptions, and categories. - Center-aligned (
:---:): Ideal for status badges, IDs, boolean flags (Yes/No), and icon indicators. - Right-aligned (
---:): Standard typographic convention for numeric data, monetary currencies, and percentage metrics so decimal points line up vertically.
Quoted Delimiters & Edge Cases in CSV
Real-world CSV exports from Excel and Google Sheets contain edge cases that simple regex split functions break on:
- Commas inside Quoted Cells: A value like
"San Francisco, CA"must not be split into two separate columns. - Escaped Double Quotes: Double quotes inside a quoted cell are represented as
""(e.g."Monitor 32"" 4K"). - Ragged Rows: If some data rows contain fewer columns than the header, our parser automatically pads missing cells to prevent broken table layouts.
