Why Modular Scales Create Better Typography
When designers pick arbitrary font sizes (e.g. 14px, 17px, 23px, 31px), pages often feel discordant or visually cluttered.
A modular scale uses a fixed geometric multiplier (Size = Base × Ratio^step). Just as musical octaves create acoustic resonance, visual scales rooted in the Golden Ratio (1.618) or Major Third (1.25) create effortless optical hierarchy that leads the reader's eye instinctively.
The 61.8% to 38.2% Golden Layout Rule
Dividing any width by 1.618 splits the canvas into two sections: a primary content body occupying 61.8% and an auxiliary sidebar occupying 38.2%.
This ratio has been utilized from the Parthenon in ancient Greece to Renaissance typography and modern newspaper editorials because it provides ample breathing room for long-form reading while keeping navigation panels comfortably within peripheral vision.
