Collegiate Grading Systems: 4.0 Scale & Quality Points
How Quality Points (QP) Work
GPA is a credit-weighted average, not a simple arithmetic mean. A 4-credit course exerts twice as much impact on your GPA as a 2-credit elective.
QP = Course Credits × Grade Point
GPA = Total QP / Total Credits
GPA = Total QP / Total Credits
An “A” (4.0) in a 4-credit class earns 16.0 quality points.
Cumulative GPA Weighting
To combine your previous semesters with your current term, you must weight by total credits:
Cumul. GPA = (Prior QP + Term QP) / (Prior Cr + Term Cr)
A student with 90 credits will find their cumulative GPA much harder to move than a freshman with only 15 completed credits.
Standard 4.0 Scale Conversion

- B: 3.00 (83–86%)
- C: 2.00 (73–76%)
- F: 0.00 (<60%)
