Mastering Modern CSS Gradients

Understanding Linear, Radial & Conic Gradients

Modern CSS provides three native gradient functions implemented directly by browser GPU rasterizers:

  • Linear Gradients: Color transitions along a straight line determined by an angle (e.g., 90deg) or directional keyword (to bottom right).
  • Radial Gradients: Transitions emanate outwardly in concentric circles or ellipses from a focal point like center or top left.
  • Conic Gradients: Color stops rotated around a 360° central pivot point, ideal for color wheels, pie charts, and gleaming chrome reflections.

Hard Stops and Performance Best Practices

By specifying two color stops at the exact same percentage (e.g. #ff0000 50%, #0000ff 50%), you create an instantaneous hard color transition without any intermediate blur. This is a lightweight technique for split-color card designs, candy stripes, and geometric patterns without extra DOM elements.

Because CSS gradients are rendered as vector backgrounds rather than downloaded raster images (PNG/JPEG), they scale crisply to any DPI and add zero HTTP network payload to your page load time.
