JSON Best Practices & Common Syntax Pitfalls
Top 3 Causes of JSON Parse Errors
- Trailing commas: In JavaScript objects, trailing commas like
{"a": 1,}are allowed. In standard JSON (RFC 8259), trailing commas are strictly forbidden. - Single quotes instead of double quotes: JSON requires double quotes around both property keys and string values. Single quotes like
{'name': 'test'}will throw a syntax error. - Unquoted keys: All keys in JSON must be enclosed in double quotes (e.g.
"id": 101rather thanid: 101).
Why Minifying JSON Accelerates Web Performance
Whitespace, indentation, and newlines in large JSON responses can consume 20% to 40% of the raw uncompressed payload size. Minifying JSON collapses the document onto a single line, minimizing network bandwidth and speeding up JSON parsing on mobile clients.
