Why Copied PDF Text Has Broken Line Endings

How the PDF Format Stores Typography

Unlike word processors or responsive HTML web pages that maintain continuous sentences inside paragraphs, the PDF (Portable Document Format) specification was designed as a digital print standard:

  • Hard Physical Coordinates: PDF engines place individual lines at fixed physical X/Y page coordinates.
  • Forced Hard Breaks: When you highlight and copy text from a multi-column PDF or academic journal, the clipboard copies a hard carriage return (\n) at the end of every visible line on the page.
  • Pasting Issues: Pasting into Google Docs, Word, or Slack creates jagged, choppy lines that break sentence continuity.

The Two-Newline Heuristic & Hyphen Repair

Our automated cleanup algorithm repairs broken layout copies through two key steps:

  • De-hyphenation: Printed books split long words across lines with hyphens (e.g., appli-\ncation). Our regex detection recombines them back into application.
  • Paragraph Detection: True paragraph changes are separated by blank space (two or more consecutive newlines). Single newlines are safely converted into spaces while double newlines remain intact.
