GitHub Flavored Markdown Table Syntax & Formatting Guide
GFM Table Structural Rules
Standard Markdown as originally specified by John Gruber did not include table syntax. GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) and CommonMark Extensions standardized table markup using vertical pipes (|) and hyphens (-):
- Header Row: The very first row defines the column names. Each cell must be separated by a vertical bar.
- Delimiter Row: The second row must contain at least three hyphens (
---) beneath each column header to establish boundaries between headings and tabular content. - Pipes Escaping: If your cell content contains a literal pipe character, escape it using a backslash (
\|) so the parser does not treat it as a column delimiter.
Controlling Column Text Alignment
You can align table cell text by placing colons (:) inside the delimiter row hyphens:
:---Left-Aligned
Colons placed on the left side align column text to the left. Default standard for descriptive text and strings.
:---:Center-Aligned
Colons on both ends center-align text. Ideal for short status badges, icons, and boolean flags (Yes/No).
---:Right-Aligned
Colon on the right side right-aligns text. Strongly recommended for numeric data, currencies, and timestamps.
