QR Code Anatomy, Scannability Limits & Error Correction Standards
Reed-Solomon Error Correction Levels
QR codes embed redundant Reed-Solomon polynomial math enabling scanners to recover damaged or occluded data:
- Level L (Low): 7% of codeword data can be restored. Ideal for maximum data density on clean screens.
- Level M (Medium): 15% recovery capacity. The general-purpose default for mobile web links.
- Level Q (Quartile): 25% recovery capacity. Suited for industrial and warehouse environments.
- Level H (High): Up to 30% of data can be restored. Mandatory when embedding center logos or custom artwork badges.
The 3 Finder Patterns & Quiet Zone Rules
Optical sensors locate and de-skew QR codes by scanning three 7x7 module square patterns:
- Finder Eyes (Position Detection): Located at top-left, top-right, and bottom-left. Scanners determine orientation by measuring the 1:1:3:1:1 black/white ratio across the eyes.
- The Quiet Zone: The ISO 18004 specification requires a clean 4-module margin around all edges. Removing this buffer causes reading failures when placed on textured or dark backgrounds.
- Contrast Ratios: Foreground colors should always be significantly darker than background shades (aim for a minimum 4.5:1 WCAG contrast ratio).
Print Resolution Guidelines
When preparing QR codes for physical printing (business cards, posters, trade show booths), render at 1024px or 2048px. Physical codes should measure at least 2 cm × 2 cm (0.8 in × 0.8 in) to ensure smartphone cameras can focus reliably from standard reading distances.
