Common String Obfuscation & Encoding Standards
When to Use Obfuscation vs. True Cryptography
It is vital to distinguish between obfuscation and encryption:
- Obfuscation (ROT13, Base64, Hex): Designed for data interchange, hiding email addresses from automated scraper bots, or masking spoilers on forums. They provide no cryptographic security because anyone can decode them without a secret key.
- True Encryption (AES-GCM, RSA): Uses mathematically complex keys to guarantee confidentiality against adversarial decryption. Never rely on ROT13 or Base64 to store sensitive credentials or personally identifiable information (PII).
How ROT13 and Base64 Formats Work
Understanding the mechanical rules behind common transformations:
- ROT13: A special case of the Caesar cipher where each Latin alphabet letter is rotated by 13 positions. Because the alphabet has 26 letters, applying ROT13 twice restores the exact original message.
- Base64: Takes binary byte streams (groups of 3 bytes / 24 bits) and maps them into 4 printable ASCII characters (each representing 6 bits). It increases payload size by approximately 33%.
