Why Hexadecimal Is the Language of Systems Engineering
The Relationship Between Binary and Hexadecimal
While computers operate internally on binary bits (0 and 1), long binary strings like 0100100001100101011011000110110001101111 are exhausting for humans to read:
- Base-16 Compaction: Each hexadecimal digit represents exactly 4 binary bits (a nibble). Two hex digits represent exactly one 8-bit byte (0x00 to 0xFF).
- 1:2 Ratio: A byte like 255 is
11111111in binary, but justFFin hex. - Memory Addresses: Operating systems, network Wireshark dumps, and CPU debuggers use hexadecimal because memory addresses align cleanly with byte boundaries.
Common Hex Delimiter Conventions
Depending on the programming environment, hexadecimal bytes are written in different formats:
0xPrefix: The standard C, C++, Rust, Go, and JavaScript integer literal syntax (e.g.0x48).\xEscape: Used in strings and regular expressions (e.g.\x48\x65\x6c) to represent raw binary byte sequences.- Colon Separated (
:): Standard representation for MAC network hardware addresses and IPv6 blocks. - Percent Encoded (
%): Standard URI query string percent-encoding format (e.g.%20for space).
