What Is Unix Time (Epoch)?
The Genesis of January 1, 1970
Unix time (also known as POSIX time or Epoch time) represents the number of seconds that have elapsed since the Unix epoch: January 1, 1970, 00:00:00 UTC, excluding leap seconds.
Because it is a single integer, Unix timestamps eliminate all ambiguity caused by timezones, daylight saving time shifts, and regional calendar formats, making them the universal standard for logging events, database storage, and API synchronization across the internet.
What Is the Year 2038 Problem (Y2K38)?
Many legacy computer systems store Unix timestamps as signed 32-bit integers. The maximum value a signed 32-bit integer can hold is 2,147,483,647, which corresponds to January 19, 2038, at 03:14:07 UTC.
On that second, unpatched 32-bit systems will overflow and wrap around to negative numbers, interpreting the date as December 13, 1901. Modern 64-bit systems (int64) solve this completely, expanding the timestamp range to over 292 billion years.
