Dining Gratuity Standards & Bill Splitting Etiquette
Tipping in North America
In the United States and Canada, servers often receive a tip-credited minimum wage below standard statutory thresholds.
A gratuity of 18% to 20% is considered standard courtesy for full table service, with 15% reserved for basic service and 22%+ for superior hospitality.
Europe & Asia Expectations
In European nations (e.g. France, Germany, Italy), service is legally built into the bill (service compris). Rounding up or leaving 5–10% in cash is polite appreciation.
In Japan and South Korea, tipping is generally neither expected nor customary, and can sometimes be interpreted as an insinuation of inadequate wages.
Tip on Pre-Tax or Post-Tax?
Traditional etiquette dictates that tips should be calculated on the pre-tax food and beverage subtotal rather than on government sales tax.
However, many point-of-sale terminal presets automatically calculate tips on the post-tax total. When paying on modern terminals, be mindful of which base is being used.
