A free typing speed test for everyday practice

Find out how quickly and accurately you type with this free online typing test. Start a challenge and type the passage shown on screen to see your words per minute (WPM), accuracy, progress, and typing streak. Use a short round for a quick check or a longer session to settle into a steady rhythm. The typing game runs in your browser and does not require an account or a download.

Choose a typing mode that fits your goal

Word Rush: build speed with focused drills

Practice individual words in Easy, Medium, or Hard difficulty, or mix words from all three levels. Choose a 25, 50, or 100-word challenge and repeat it with a fresh set whenever you are ready. Word drills are useful for warming up, practicing unfamiliar vocabulary, and building a more consistent typing rhythm.

Story Mode: practice with complete passages

Type a short story instead of a list of separate words. Pick a passage or generate another at random, then practice punctuation, spaces, and longer stretches of text. Story typing tests are a useful way to work on accuracy and flow while reading as you type.

What do WPM and accuracy mean?

WPM means words per minute. This typing speed test estimates it by counting correctly typed characters, treating five characters as one standard word, and dividing by the time spent typing. Accuracy shows how your correct keystrokes compare with your recorded typing attempts. Reading both numbers together gives a more useful picture than speed alone: a steady pace with fewer mistakes is a strong foundation for improving.

Your live results update as you type. When a round ends, the result board also shows raw speed, mistakes, correctly typed characters, and elapsed time. A personal best is saved in your browser for each game mode so you can compare later sessions on the same device.

Simple ways to improve your typing speed

  • Prioritize accuracy first. Slow down enough to enter the right keys. A comfortable, accurate rhythm is easier to build on than repeated rushed corrections.
  • Look ahead at the text. Read a few characters or words in front of your hands so you can prepare for what comes next.
  • Practice in short, regular sessions. Repeat a 25-word drill or a short story, then gradually try longer rounds as your accuracy becomes more consistent.
  • Compare like with like. Use the same mode and difficulty when checking whether your WPM and accuracy are improving over time.

Typing speed test questions

How can I test my typing speed online?

Choose Word Rush or Story Mode, select a challenge length and duration, then type the displayed text. Your WPM and accuracy appear live, with a detailed result board at the end.

What is a good typing speed?

A useful typing speed depends on what you need to do and how accurately you type. Rather than comparing yourself with a single target, use the same kind of test to track your own WPM and accuracy as you practice.

Can I practice typing without a timer?

The game offers timed rounds of 15, 30, 60, or 120 seconds. Choose a longer round when you want more time to settle into a passage, or use a short round for a quick practice session.

Are my typing results stored online?

Your personal-best score is saved locally in your browser for each mode. The game does not need an account, and your typed practice text is not submitted to a score server.

Can I use the typing test on a phone?

Yes. The page adapts to smaller screens, though a physical keyboard is generally more comfortable for measuring touch-typing speed.
