How Upside Down Text Works via Unicode
Why Upside Down Letters Work Everywhere
Unlike CSS transforms (transform: rotate(180deg)) which only rotate text visually inside a browser window, upside-down text generated here uses actual Unicode characters.
The Unicode standard includes glyphs from the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), mathematical logic symbols (like ∀ for "for all" and ∃ for "there exists"), and archaic scripts that happen to be inverted mirrors of Latin letters.
Why Inversion Also Requires Reversing
If you rotate a physical sheet of paper upside down by 180 degrees:
- The first letter of the first word moves to the bottom-right corner of the page.
- Therefore, for flipped text to read correctly when a mobile phone is physically turned upside down, the characters must be inverted and the order of characters reversed backwards.
- For example:
Hello→oꞁꞁǝH.
