What Is URL Percent-Encoding?

Why Do URLs Need Percent-Encoding?

Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) can only be transmitted over the internet using a restricted set of ASCII characters. Characters outside the allowable set (like spaces, emojis, or symbols like &, ?, #) have special semantic meanings in a URL.

To send data safely inside query strings without breaking the URL structure, special characters are replaced with a % followed by their two-digit hexadecimal ASCII representation (e.g., a space becomes %20).

Difference Between encodeURI and encodeURIComponent

encodeURI: Intended for complete URLs. It does not encode protocol characters like : / ? & = because they are needed to locate the web address.

encodeURIComponent: Intended for individual query parameters. It encodes every special character, ensuring that values like filter=fast&secure don't accidentally split your query string into unintended extra parameters.
