Wi-Fi QR Protocol Architecture: ZXing Standards & Device Compatibility

The Standard ZXing Wi-Fi URI Syntax

Standardized initially by the open-source ZXing barcode project and adopted natively by Apple iOS (since iOS 11) and Android (since Android 10):

  • Format: WIFI:T:<AuthType>;S:<SSID>;P:<Password>;H:<Hidden>;;
  • Authentication Types: WPA (covers WPA, WPA2, and WPA3 Personal), WEP, or nopass for open guest captive portals.
  • Character Escaping: If the SSID or password contains colons (:), semicolons (;), commas (,), or backslashes (\), they must be escaped with a preceding backslash.
