XML Well-Formedness & Feed Syndication Guide
The 5 Golden Rules of Well-Formed XML
Unlike permissive HTML parsers, XML parsers operate under strict "draconian error handling" rules: if a single syntax error is detected, the document fails completely.
- Single Root Element: Every valid XML document must have exactly one root element that encloses all other child nodes.
- Strict Closing Tags: All non-empty elements must have a corresponding closing tag (e.g.
<title>...</title>), and void elements must be self-closing (<link href="..." />). - Proper Nesting: Tags cannot overlap.
<b><i>text</b></i>is illegal in XML. - Case Sensitivity: XML tags are case-sensitive;
<Title>and<title>are distinct elements. - Quoted Attribute Values: All attribute values must be enclosed in single or double quotes (
version="1.0").
XML vs. JSON: Modern Web Architecture Tradeoffs
While JSON has largely supplanted XML for REST APIs and browser-to-server exchanges due to lightweight serialization, XML remains indispensable in enterprise web architecture:
Where XML Dominates
Search engine sitemaps (sitemap.xml), RSS and Atom podcast/blog distribution feeds, SVG vector artwork, SVG icon sets, and SOAP enterprise banking integrations with XSD schema validation.
Where JSON Dominates
High-throughput RESTful microservices, mobile API payloads, NoSQL document databases (MongoDB, DynamoDB), and configuration files (package.json, tsconfig.json) where minimal parsing overhead is paramount.
