}YAML vs. JSON: Differences & Conversion Rules
Indentation & White-Space Sensitivity
YAML relies strictly on indentation to convey data hierarchy, using spaces rather than tabs. A single stray tab or inconsistent two-versus-four space indent can invalidate an entire configuration block.
In contrast, JSON uses curly braces {} and brackets [], making it immune to indentation drift during network transport.
When to Use YAML vs. JSON in Engineering
YAML is the dominant format for human-authored infrastructure configs (such as Kubernetes manifests, Docker Compose, Ansible playbooks, and Helm charts) because it supports comments and clean readability.
JSON remains the gold standard for high-throughput machine-to-machine APIs, browser network serialization, and database document storage due to its strict specifications and faster parsing speed.
